What is a movement assessment?

A movement assessment is one of the tools I use to help put together workout programs for the clients that I work with. There are a variety of assessments that a trainer can use but ultimately the goal is to screen the body (in motion) for  information that will help your trainer design a workout program. They are important for learning about our body’s muscle imbalances, where we are strong (and most likely over using), where we are weak, where we are tight, and can be used as a baseline starting point. All this information is useful in creating a workout program that is catered to your body’s needs.

If you haven’t done one before and are experiencing pain in your body or if you are experiencing a plateau in your results, I highly recommend you get one done. There is no one size fits all approach to fitness and learning where your imbalances are in strength, mobility and flexibility is a huge asset in increasing the longevity of your body. It also will help you maximize your time and  be more effective with your training program. The information from a movement screen will show you whether it would be beneficial to add a new foam rolling series into your warm up, add some new exercises into your routine, OR (dare I say it) take something out of your routine because you don’t need it.

Many people that come to me for Pilates training come to me as a last resort for pain management after already giving a go at it on their own. One of the reasons that Pilates works for helping people manage pain is because it strengthens what is undertrained and lengthens (aka stretches)  what is overtrained. Training a muscle or movement pattern that is overdominant in your body could be a reason that you feel like working out isn’t actually working.
