4 Tips to avoid the Fall Backslide

We are now a week into Fall and well into pumpkin spice lattes season. If your grocery store is anything like mine halloween treats and baked goods are on prominent display as soon as you walk in. Did someone say apple pie?

It can be very easy to take a step back from your summer exercise routine when it starts dropping below fifty degrees at night, and you stay inside all warm and cozy by your fur-baby or significant other on a Netflix binge. We miss the signs that things are starting to drop off now. Keep your summer momentum going! Here, four ways to do just that.

Rethink your “Why”

During the summer, it’s easy to be motivated to upkeep the body you know will be frequently in bathing suits. When we think of exercise as something we do to our bodies instead of for our bodies, we lose sight of all the things it can do for us. When we have a goal that isn't aesthetic related, it can help us to stay consistent with our routine even on those days where we don't want to get out of bed and battle the cold weather. For me, it's wanting to move better and continually become stronger so that I can live pain free. If I start to backslide, I can feel the soreness creep up in my post-surgery hip and lower back. Consistency is key to maintenance of the muscles that help support the areas around injuries.

Create a contract with yourself

This one I got from Atomic Habits. When you create a pact between yourself and a coach by an agreed-upon date it establishes an extra layer of accountability. James Clear recommends adding a consequence if you don't hold up your end of the bargain.

Personally, I prefer positivity over punishment so I like to give myself prizes. Recently I’ve been treating myself to a new workout piece at the end of every program cycle I complete. BUT if you are more motivated because you don't want to be stuck doing the dishes for a whole week or whatever it was your partner/ roommate/friend agreed on, then do that.

Treat every day as a new day

Each time you wake up, you start off with a healthy body. Instead of thinking about what went wrong yesterday focus on what you can do in the present.

Have FUN with your nutrition

What I've learned through my precision nutrition certification is that nutrition is MORE than half the battle. We associate summer with fun. There are BBQs, beach days, pool days. Fall offers just as many delicious ways to fuel your body well and also be associated with fun. If you've heard me talk about food in my IG stories, I am all about the crock pot right now. Throw in some protein, veggies, and some seasonings in the morning and your dinner will be waiting for you when you get home! No one wants to be standing in the kitchen for an hour when the day ALREADY feels shorter.

I’ve recovered from several surgeries (including a hip labral tear repair from playing rugby) and went from being medically told to give up my active hobbies to becoming a half marathoner.

Outside of fitness I am a dog mom, I love video games and adventuring & traveling with my husband.

My goal is to help you rebuild confidence in your body's movement, improve your strength, and help reduce your pain.
