Tips to picking the right plants for your home
One of the things that I was most excited for in my move was my workout space. Where I lived before my workout space was in a west facing room and the afternoon sun would fry the plants that I wanted in there. I wanted something green and lucious to spruce up the room and also hide the outlets that were against the wall I would film my YouTube videos against. Yes, you can find plants that tolerate direct sunlight BUT they usually don’t make the best indoor plants. At least not the kind that I was looking for aesthetically.
Tip #1 Know what the lighting that you are working with
So with this new room I had a clean slate. After we moved I waited about a week before I started looking up plants to fill the space. I checked to see how much lighting the room got at different times of the day. Some indoor plants do just fine with minimal amount of light and some plants prefer to have a lot of indirect light and before I started researching what kind of plants I wanted I wanted to know what I was dealing with.
I am lucky in that my studio has 2 windows, two on the west side and two on the east. That means I get indirect light throughout the entire day with a little bit of direct light through one of the west facing windows (this is important to know). Now I could start researching the plants I wanted to fill the room.
Tip #2 Know where your plants would go
I assessed my space to figure out the number of plants I would need and the size that I would be looking for. Already in the house there were a couple ceiling hangers/hooks in place and I had two located in my room. So I knew I would be look into dangling plants preferably ones that look cute in a macrame holder and don’t make a mess over white carpet. I also took note of where the outlets where that I wanted hidden, where the workout equipment would go and what walls would be empty. Did I plan to have anything hanging on the walls (art, workout equipment holder etc.)?Basically I was looking for space that would need “filling” or a pop of color. Eventually I settled on 2 medium/tall plants to hide the outlets, potentially 1 tall plant by the door, and 2 small plants that would hang from the ceiling.
Tip #3 Know the maintenance level of what you want to care for
I knew I wanted LOW maintenance plants. I don’t know how many times I started a vegetable garden thinking that this year will be the year I keep it alive only to forget to water it on a daily basis. If you are a busy mama and don’t need something else to add onto your plate of to-dos something that needs water everyday is not for you. I knew that I was looking at something that maybe needed watering 1x/wk and if I forgot I would prefer it to show me in an obvious way that she was thirsty. I wasn’t about to start poking my finger in the dirt of a plant hanging from a ceiling.
And with those things in mind you should have the ingredients YOU need to pick the right plants for your house environment. Also, as corny as it sounds WE are basically like plants. Make sure you get some sunshine drink plenty of water and make sure you get the nutrients you need. Our bodies also have signs that we sometimes ignore that tell us when we are not getting enough sleep, water or the right food.
